It is certainly the most famous, rivaled only by Jerez. Rioja in Northern Spain is best known for berry-scented, barrel-aged red wines made from Tempranillo and Garnacha.
The malolactic fermentation takes place in new French oak barrels where the wine remains for 12 months.
Once in the cellar it ferments with native yeasts in open wooden vats. The grapes are harvested by hand and placed in 10 kg boxes, with the selection being performed in the vineyard itself.
